Thief River Falls, Minn. - 

The Northland volleyball team started its season with a win Thursday night, defeating the Sisseton Wahpetion College Mustangs in straight sets 25-16, 25-13, 25-12. 

Northland freshman Allyson Hart led the Pioneers in kills in her debut with nine kills. Sophomore Giselle Cole added six kills and freshman Riley Gust finished with five. 

Sophomore Sunny Edin was a hitter on last year's Northland team. On Thursday night, she played setter for the first time since middle school and finished with 28 assists and a pair of kills.  

Defensively, the Pioneers were led by freshman Jada Kosmatka with nine digs. Edin recorded seven digs and sophomore Kennedy Wallace added six digs. 

Schedule update
The Pioneers' home and season opener against the Mustangs was a late edition to the team schedule. After some confusion on the schedule, the match was officially added to the schdedule on Wednesday. The Pioneers are off until Friday, Aug. 25 when they participate in the two-day, four-match MCAC Crossover Tournament at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids. The Pioneers play Ridgewater at 10:30 a.m. and Riverland at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Pioneers play St. Cloud Technical and Community College at 1 p.m., before wrapping up the weekend against tournament host Anoka-Ramsey at 3:30 p.m.
