Grand Rapids, MN - Northland Community & Technical College won five of the six contest matches and seven matches overall in a 37-18 triumph over Itasca Community College Thursday night in Grand Rapids. The dual between the Pioneers and Vikings was a non-conference matchup billed as the Inaugural Battle of the North. The two teams are slated to wrestle again Jan. 15 during the MCAC Duals in Rochester.
Itasca got on the board first with a win by forfeit by Brady Gross at 174. The Vikings added a win by fall from Dalton Bernett at 184 and a forfeit victory by Chase Dressel at 197 to take an 18-0 lead in the dual.
Northland got on the board with a win by fall at heavyweight from
Micah Butler.
Tyrese Hicks accepted a forfeit at 125 to cut the Vikings' lead to six points, and the Pioneers tied the dual with a win by fall from
Austin Thompson over David Stapleton at 133.
Jerimiah Pierre kept the momentum going for the Pioneers with a win by fall over Itasca's Joseph Colla at 149. At 157
Raul Chavarry made it six wins in a row for the Pioneers with a 4-3 win over Davion Barnes. Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers was
Kaven Blazek with an 11-2 win at 165.
Up next for the Pioneers is the team's first ever appearance in the NWCA Multi-Division National Duals Jan. 10-11 in Louisville, KY.
