Thief River Falls, MN - Northland started and ended fast in 65-52 women's basketball win over Western Technical College Saturday in Thief River Falls.
The Pioneers almost shutout the Cavaliers in the first quarter, holding 14-1 edge after 10 minutes. Western Tech, the defending MCAC Southern Division champion, battled back in the second and third quarters to tie the contest 38-38. Northland regained control in the fourth and pulled away for the 13-point win to improve to 3-4 on the season and 3-0 against MCAC Southern Division opponents. 
Reigning MCAC Northern Division Player of the Week Carly Mekash scored a double-double for the Pioneers with 28 points and 10 rebounds. 
The Pioneers open MCAC Northern Division play Friday, Dec. 20 at Vermilion Community College in Ely. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
