Virginia, MN - The Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team outscored MCAC Northern Division opponents Itasca and Mesabi Range by a combined 83 points during a road trip to Minnesota's Iron Range Saturday, Jan. 11 and Sunday, Jan. 12. 

The Pioneers led by Vikings 17-5 after one quarter of play Saturday in Grand Rapids and they widened the gap over the final 30 minutes en route to a 76-40 win. All five starters reached double figures in scoring, led by 18 points from Carly Mekash. Also scoring in double figures were Janie Wunderlich, 15, Macy Skyberg, 14, Emma Duden, 13, and Bailey Greene, 10. 

Sunday was more of the same for the Pioneers, who exploded for 29 points and a 17-point first quarter lead in a matinee at Mesab Range College. The Pioneers scored another 28 points in the second quarter for an impressive 57-19 halftime lead. Northland let up offensively in the second half, but the defense stayed solid as the Pioneers held the Lady Norse to just 25 points in a second half. Mekash, 23, Wunderlich, 17, and Duden, 10 were in double figures for the second consecutive game, while Holly Steer and Emma Waling scored in double figures off the bench, with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
