Thief River Falls - The Northland Community & Technical College men's basketball team overcame 37 turnovers to defeat the M State-Fergus Falls Spartans 95-87 in an MCAC inter-division game Tuesday night in Thief River Falls.

The Pioneers led 5-0 early but trailed for much of the first half. The Spartans led by as many as six points in the opening half, at 18-12, but the Pioneers battled back. The final eight minutes of the first half featured nine lead changes and two ties with the Spartans holding a 42-40 edge after 20 minutes

The Spartans led by as many as 15 on several occasions in the second half, including a 66-51 edge with 12 minutes left in the game. The Pioneers went on a 23-7 run in the five-minute stretch from 11:40 to 6:40 and took a 74-73 lead. The Pioneers never trailed again, as they outscored the Spartans 21-14 over the final six and half minutes. 

The Pioneers held the Spartans to 33 percent overall field goal percentage (32-for-96) and just 18.9 percent (10-for-53) on three-point attempts. What kept the Spartans in the game were the turnovers, caused in part by the Spartans' full-court press. 

When the Pioneers did get to their offense, they were successful, hitting on 35 of 57 field goal attempts (61.4 percent), including a 5-for-9 showing from beyond the arc. 

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 2-1, while the Spartans fell to 2-2. Next up for the Pioneers is a Nov. 30 home contest against Mayville State University JV. The opening tip off is set for 6:30 p.m.
