Ironwood, Mich. - The Northland women's basketball team kicked off the 2021-22 season with a 1-1 finish at the GCC Classic hosted by Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Mich. On Friday night, the Pioneers were outscored 15-8 in the fourth quarter to drop a 50-48 decision to Milwaukee Area Tech, an NJCAA Division II team.

The Stormers built a two-point advantage, leading 21-19, after one half of play was in the books. The Pioneers came out strong in the third quarter and built a five-point lead before the Stormers rallied in the final quarter. The Stormers went on to defeat host Gogebic 57-42 on Saturday. Macy Skyberg, Kasey Stegman and Keylee Dahl finished in double figures for the Pioneers, with Skyberg and Stegman scoring 11 points, and Dahl adding 10. Skyberg added 12 rebounds, with 11 of those coming on the defnesive end of the court. 

The Pioneers didn't have much time to regroup following the loss, as they geared up to face defending NJCAA Division III National Champion Western Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers and Cavaliers last met on Friday, March 13, 2020 in the 2020 NJCAA Division III championship game. It was the second game of the day for both schools, with the Cavaliers pulling away down the stretch of a very tight game to defeat the Pioneers 69-60. 

Six hundred-one days after the teams last played, the Pioneers and Cavaliers met again at a neutral site. This time it was the top-ranked Pioneers who pulled away down the stretch for a 61-50 win. 
The Pioneers built a 20-12 lead through one quarter of play, but the Cavaliers were able to keep the game close over the next two quarters. The Pioneers led by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter before the Cavaliers worked the deficit down in the final minutes. 

Dahl, 18 points and 10 rebounds, recorded a double double, with Jackie Taflin, 14, and Stegman, 12, also reaching double figures in scoring for the Pioneers. 

The Pioneers will be back in action Monday night against University of Jamestown JV. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
