Brainerd, Minn. - The Northland men's basketball team picked up its first MCAC Northern Division win of the season Tuesday night, 70-63 over Central lakes College in Brainerd.
Northland appeared to be running away with the game after one half of play. The Pioneers led by as many as 15 in the opening half and took a 42-28 lead into the locker room.
The Raiders trailed by as many as 16 early in the second half before rallying. They used a 5-0 run to make the score 52-42 with 13:19 left, followed by an 8-4 run over the next five and a half minutes to make it a six-point game.
The teams traded scores for a while, with the Raiders getting to within two points of the Pioneers with 4:26 left to play and tying the game 60-60 with 3:25 left to play.
Following a full timeout, the Pioneers regained control of the game with a 4-0 run that included a free throw by
Jaylen Webb and a
Zack Meyer three pointer.
The Raiders never got within three points of the Pioneers for the remainder of the game.
Quincy Leday and
Jaylen Webb scored the final four points at the foul line to give the Pioneers a 70-63 advantage that would end up being the final score.
Northland's Zach Meyer led all scorers with 27 points. Also in double figures for the Pioneers were
Ryan England and
Jaylen Webb with 10 points each.
The top scorer for Central Lakes was Quamar Gresham with 20 points. Also in double figures for the Raiders ere Derek Aeilts with 14 points, and Jalen Dearring with 12 points.
Up next for the Pioneers is a Saturday afternoon contest against Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
