Thief River Falls, MN - Itasca was able to keep things close early in Wednesday night's MCAC North women's basketball game between the visiting Vikings and homestanding Northland Pioneers. Then the Pioneers got hot and pulled away for a 73-46 win.
The Vikings opened the game on a 6-0 run, but the Pioneers quickly answered to tie the game 6-6 a little over three minutes into the opening quarter. The teams traded scores with Itasca holding a 10-8 lead halfway through the quarter. Northland took control from there with a 15-0 run to end the quarter.
The Pioneers kept the pressure on with an 18-14 advantage in the second quarter, and they widened the gap with a 19-7 third quarter margin.
Itasca's Mya Roberts led all scorers with 21 points. The Pioneers had three players reach double figures in scoring, with two recording double-doubles.
Keylee Dahl and
Macy Skyberg both scored 18 points to lead the Pioneers, with Dahl adding 10 boards to complete her double-double. Also finishing with a double-double for the Pioneers was
Kasey Stegman with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pioneers improved to 11-8 overall and 4-0 against MCAC North competition with the win over the Vikings. Up next for the Pioneers is a trip to International Falls on Saturday to face Rainy River (8-8 overall, 3-1 MCAC North). Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
