Thief River Falls -
The Northland volleyball team completed the season-sweep over MCAC Northern Division rival Minnesota College North - Mesabi Range Saturday in Thief River Falls but it wasn't easy. Much like the team's first meeting on Sept. 10 in Virginia, Saturday's match needed five sets to determine a winner, with Northland claiming a 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 19-17 win.
The season series between the Pioneers and Lady Norse couldn't be much closer. The Pioneers have taken six of 10 total sets and overall they outscored the Lady Norse 211-207 in cumulative points over the course of 10 sets.
Big day for Kuznia
Northland sophomore setter
Chloe Kuznia recorded 49 assists during Saturday's match and in the process she surpassed the 1,000-assist mark. Kuznia has 1,026 career assists following Saturday's match, with 506 so far in 2022. Kuznia added 12 digs and two kills to her impressive performance.
Also reaching double figures were the Pioneers hitting combo of
Madison Witte and
Giselle Cole. Witte had 23 kills over five sets, while Cole recorded 14. Defensively, the Pioneers were led by
Haven Beckett with 20 digs.
Grace Loeslie also reached double figures with 10 digs on the afternoon.
Standings shakeup
The Pioneers were retroactively credited with a win by forfeit over Central Lakes from the teams' meeting on Aug. 31. The Pioneers originally lost the match in straight sets. With that loss turned into a win, paired with Saturday's win, the Pioneers improved to a conference-leading 8-2 in MCAC Northern Division play and an 11-4 overall record. Central Lakes forfeited a total of six matches due to an eligibility rules violation and fell from first to fourth with a record of 7-4 in conference play and 10-10 overall.

The Pioneers continue their home stand Friday night when they host Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in a 6:30 p.m. start. The Pioneers are also home Saturday against Minnesota North College - Hibbing at noon.
