Thief River Falls, Minn. -

NJCAA Division I power North Dakota State College of Science used a second half surge to hand the Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team its first loss of the season Tuesday night in Thief River Falls. The host Pioneers and Wildcats were tied 31-31 after one half was in the books. The Wildcats used a 34-12 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game and they continued to add to their lead in the final period with a 22-9 scoring edge.

The Pioneers trailed 7-0 less than three minutes into the game before tightening things up defensively. They also took advantage of early foul trouble for the Wildcats by going 8-for-9 from the foul line in the first quarter as they cut the deficit to two points.

The Wildcats pushed the lead to seven points with a 5-0 run to start the second quarter, before the Pioneers battled back. Down 25-23, the Pioneers took their first lead of the night on a three-point play by Lily Bayne with 2:19 left in the second quarter. Bayne scored and was fouled on a layup and she sunk the bonus free throw to give the Pioneers a 26-25 advantage.

The Pioneers held leads of 33-31 and 38-36 in the third quarter before the Wildcats began to pull away. Already up 41-40, the Wildcats used a 24-0 over a five and a half-minute span that effectively put the game out of reach.

No Pioneers reached double figures in scoring. Shavonda Bender, Riley Mooney and Chloe Kuznia all finished with nine points. Ivy Fox led the Wildcats in scoring with 28 points. Charita Lewis and Grace Massaquoi also finished in double figures with 18 and 15 points, respectively.

The Pioneers were playing at home for the first time during the 2022-23 season. The team's original home opener against Sisseton Wahpeton College originally scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9 was postponed. The Pioneers fell to 1-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 4-1. Northland returns to its home floor Friday night to host the University of Jamestown JV at 5:30 p.m.
