The Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team competed with just six healthy players and dropped both of its games at the Anoka-Ramsey Thanksgiving Classic Saturday and Sunday at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids.
The Pioneers led 40-35 at the half of Saturday's opener against Western Tech before running out of gas in the second half. The Cavaliers took control of the game with a 28-12 third quarter scoring edge, and they added 29 fourth quarter points to claim a 92-73 win over the Pioneers.
Four Pioneers reached double figures in scoring led by a season-high 23 points from freshman Emma Osborn. Ashley Gereau, 18, Shavonda Bender, 15, and Chloe Kuznia, 11, also reached double figures. Bender added 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double.
On Sunday, the Pioneers got off to a slow start against tournament-host Anoka-Ramsey and they never recovered in a 92-47 loss. The Rams led 20-4 after one quarter and they added to their lead throughout the contest with advantages of 15-11, 33-18 and 24-14. Osborn led the Pioneers with 14 points. Casey Stegman and Gerau also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Iron-women
Sophomore Chloe Kuznia played all 80 minutes over the course of two games at Anoka-Ramsey Friday and Saturday. Fellow sophomore Casey Stegman hardly left the court with 74 minutes played for the short-handed Pioneers
Up next
The Northland women will look to get closer to full strength as they hit the road again Friday for a two-game road trip with stops in Austin and Coon Rapids. The Pioneers open the trip at Riverland on Friday, with a 5:30 p.m. scheduled start against the Blue Devils (4-0), before getting a second look at Anoka-Ramsey (4-0) at noon Saturday.
