The Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team earned a two-game split Friday and Saturday on its home court. The Pioneers dropped a heart-breaker to the fourth ranked Minnesota West Lady Jays Friday night, falling 72-67, before getting back on track Saturday with a dominant 83-23 win over a struggling Ridgewater Warriors team.
The Pioneers started fast Friday night and did not trail at any point in the opening quarter. The Pioneers led 15-12 at the start of the second quarter and added to their lead with a 7-2 run to go in fron 22-14. The Lady Jays didn't panic however, and they went on a 17-7 run over the final seven minutes of the quarter to take a 31-29 advantage into the halftime break.
The Pioneers led by as many as four points in the second half and the trailed by as many as eight, but they did not quit. With 13 second left in regulation,
Emma Osborn drained a three-pointer to make the score 70-67. A quick foul by
Lily Bayne sent Minnesota West's Audrey Drapeau to the line. She made both free throws to put the Lady Jays in front 72-67. The Pioneers attempted another three pointer with
Riley Mooney's attempt missing the mark.
Osborn led the Pioneers with 20 points. She scored 15 of her 20 points on three-point buckets. Mooney also reached double figures with a 14-point night that included going 7-for-8 from the foul line.
The Lady Jays got 70 of their 72 points from their starters, led by a 25-point, 11-rebound performance by Olivia Hayenga. Tia Murry also recorrded a double-double for the Lady Jays with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
On Saturday, the Pioneers snapped a six-game losing streak with a thoroughly-dominant win over the Warriors. The Pioneers held the Warriors to single digits in scoring all four quarters, including a two-point second quarter. Four Pioneers reached double digits in scoring against the Warriors, led by a 17-point game from Osborn.
Ashley Gereau recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Also in double figures for the Pioneers were
Shavonda Bender with 11 points and
Lynelle Charnoski with 10 points.
