The Northland men's basketball team posted a 2-0 record at the Central Lakes College New Year's Tournament Friday and Saturday, with wins over Ridgewater and Fond du Lac. Northland defeated Ridgewater 79-68 in a come-from-behind effort Friday afternoon. The Pioneers opened the game on a 12-4 run, but the Warriors answered with a 25-17 run over the next 12 mintues to tie the game 29-29 with a little over a minute to go in the first half.
The Pioneers trailed 36-32 to open the second half and they trailed by as many as seven points, before regaining the lead with a 10-2 run to take a 50-49 lead with 11:25 left to play. The Pioneers took the lead for good on a
Malic Osei-Tutu bucket with 10:50 left in the game. Osei-Tutu would finish with 12 points.
Jaelin Domingue led all scorers with 20 points. Also in double figures were
AJ Jennings with 17 points and
Izeon Aaron with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pioneers completed the weekend sweep with a 74-67 win over the Thunder of Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers led by as many as seven points and trailed by as many as three in the opening half, before taking a 34-29 lead at the break.
The Pioneers led by as many as 14 points in the second half before the Thunder rallied to tie the score at 52-52 with 9:39 left to play. The stretch run featured four lead changes and two ties, with the Pioneers eventually pulling away for the seven-point win.
Tyrel Richardson led all scorers with 20 points, five assists and four rebounds. Also in double figures for the Pioneers were Aaron with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Osei-Tutu with 13 points.
Up next
The Pioneers return home later this week for a pair of home games. Northland hosts Minnesota North College Vermilion Friday at 6 p.m., and Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range Saturday at 3 p.m.
