Northland women upset No. 14 Anoka-Ramsey at CLC Tournament

The Northland women's basketball team posted a 2-0 record at the Central Lakes College New Year's Tournament Friday and Saturday with wins over Ridgewater, 72-27, and No. 14 Anoka-Ramsey by a score of 72-57.

The Pioneers' Saturday morning win over the fourteenth-ranked Golden Rams was their first in three attempts this year. The Pioneers had just six healthy players when they dropped a 92-47 decision at Anoka-Ramsey on Nov. 27. The Pioneers were a little closer to full strength when the Golden Rams won by a score of 66-48 a week later, with that game also taking place in Coon Rapids. 

The Golden Rams pulled away with a dominant quarter in each of the first two meetings, outscoring the Pioneers 20-4 in the opening quarter Nov. 27 and 21-3 in the second quarter on Dec. 3.

On Saturday, it was the Pioneers who built a sizable first half lead with a big second quarter. The Rams led 19-15 after one quarter of play, but the Pioneers dominated the second frame with a 22-7 scoring edge to take a 37-26 lead into the locker room. 

The Golden Rams went on a 13-5 run to open the second half, but the Pioneers answered and finished the third quarter on a 12-2 run to go in front 54-41 with one quarter left to play. 

The Pioneers kept up the pace in the fourth quarter and held off the Golden Rams for the 15-point win. 

After playing shorthanded their first two meetings, the Pioneers were able to showcase their depth with six players reaching double figures in scoring. Emma Osborn and Chloe Kuznia scored 15 points each, while Kasey Stegman, Riley Mooney and Ashley Gereau each scored 14 points. Stegman (9), Mooney (8) and Lily Bayne (7) combined for 24 of the Pioneers' 36 rebounds. 

Pioneers take care of Warriors

The Pioneers began their weekend with a dominant 72-27 win over the Ridgewater Warriors Friday afternoon. The Pioneers also defeated the Warriors 83-23 on Dec. 10. 

The Pioneers scored at least 17 points in each quarter Friday and never allowed more than eight. Bayne led all scorers with 15 points and six assists. Also reaching double figures for the Pioneers were Osborn and Mooney with 12 points each.

Up next
The Pioneers begin MCAC Northern Division play on Saturday, Jan. 7 with a 1 p.m. home game against Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range.
