Robinson, Fitzgerald lead Royals to win over Pioneers

12/7/2022 7:25:00 PM

Thief River Falls, Minn. -

Visiting Lake Region State College got 24 points from Ray'ven Robinson and 21 points from Kyla Fitzgerald Wednesday night in an 80-63 win over Northland Community & Technical College in a non-conference women's basketball game in Thief River Falls.

Despite a noticeable height disadvantage, the host Pioneers were able to stay with the NJCAA Division I Royals for most of the opening quarter thanks to five three-point buckets by Emma Osborn. Osborn went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first quarter and finished the game 9-for-14 in three-point attempts. All 27 of Osborn's points came via the three-point bucket.

The Pioneers got to within five points of the Royals following a pair of free throws by Riley Mooney with 3.7 seconds left in the opening quarter. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, that was more than enough time for the Royals to advance the ball up the court and get the ball to Robinson who sunk a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Royals a 27-19 lead.

The Royals methodically added to their lead in the second quarter. They scored just 14 points in the frame but they contested every shot and held the Pioneers to nine points, to take a 41-28 lead into the locker room.

The Pioneers trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before going on a 9-0 run the final 4:24 of the third quarter to make the score 57-47.

The Royals opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run that gave them a 66-49 lead with a little over six minutes left to play. They led by as many as 22 points, before the Pioneers finished the game on a 7-2 run to cut the Royals lead to 17 points.

Joining Osborn in double figures for the Pioneers was Shavonda Bender with 13 points. Riley Mooney and Kasey Stegman were the top rebounders for the Pioneers, with six for Mooney and five for Stegman.

The Pioneers will be back in action Friday and Saturday with a pair of home games. The Pioneers host fourth-ranked Minnesota West (10-1) Friday night at 5:30 p.m., before wrapping up the first half of the season Saturday against Ridgewater (0-7) at 1 p.m.
