Thief River Falls, Minn. - Over the last two games the Northland men's basketball team has proven that if there is time on the clock, there is time for a comeback. For the second time in as many games the Pioneers trailed by double digits in the second half before rallying for a win. On Saturday, the Northland men came back from 12 points down in the second half to stun Mesabi Range. On Wednesday, the Pioneers rallied from a 17-point second half deficit to stun the Hibbing Cardinals 64-58.
Wednesday's game was a tale of two halves. The Pioneers started slow and they were already down 14-4 halfway through the first half. They stayed within 10 points of the Cardinals for most of the half until a late surge gave the Cardinals a 31-16 advantage as the teams headed to the locker room.
The Pioneers were down 35-18 with 18:50 left to play and they began chipping away at the lead. They were down by 11 (44-33) with 10:33 left to play before a 5-0 run got the Pioneers to within six points with 9:55 on the clock. The Pioneers were still down by five (51-46) with 6:27 left to play. They took their first lead since the opening minutes of the game with a 6-0 run to go in front 52-51 with 5:06 left to play.
The Pioneers sealed the comeback win by going 7-for-8 from the foul line over the final 1:17. The Pioneers improved to 6-4 in MCAC Northern Divisoin play and 10-10 overall with the win. Hibbing fell to 3-8 in the divison and 6-14 overall with the loss.
Up next for the Pioneers is a Saturday afternoon home game against Vermilion. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
