Northland men fall to Riverland in Region 13 semifinal

Coon Rapids, Minn. - The Northland men's basketball team dropped an 80-60 decision to Riverland in a Region 13 semifinal game Saturday at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

The Pioneers entered the postseason as the number two-seeded team in the MCAC Northern Division and lived up to their seed an opening-round 80-74win over South Number three St. Cloud Technical & Community College. The Pioneers trailed 24-16  with 7:37 left to play in the opening half, but they ended the half on a 25-10 run to take a seven-point lead into the locker room. 

The Pioneers led by 16 (56-40) with 11:06 left to play. The Cyclones chipped away at the lead but still trailed 68-61 with 4:26 left to play. The Pioneers didn't let it get any closer until the final six seconds, when St. Cloud's Michael Asbury drained a three pointer to get the Cyclones to within six of the Pioneers at the final buzzer. 

D'Mani Nettles and Zack Meyer had huge opening-round games for the Pioneers, scoring 32 and 21 points, respectively. 

Pioneers' upset bid fall short
Slow starts have plagued the Pioneers late in the 2021-22 season but that wasn't the case Saturday against south number one-seeded Riverland Blue Devils (28-1, 14-0). The Pioneers led by as many as nine points in the opening half with a 13-4 lead at with 13:01 left in the opening half. The Blue Devils tied the game 19-19 with a 15-6 run over the next five and a half minutes. The teams traded scores for the remainder of the half with neither team leading the other by more than four points over the final seven minutes of the half. 

Up 31-29 at the half, the Blue Devils seized firm control of the game with a 19-2 run over the first six minutes of the second half to go in front 50-31. The Blue Devils led by as many as 26 in the second half and went on to win 80-60.    

Kenny Placide, 14 points, and Meyer, 12, were the only Pioneers in double figures.
