St. Cloud, Minn. - The ninth-seeded Northland baseball team defeated eighth-seeded Mesabi Range 6-1 in the opening round of the Region 13 baseball tournament Friday before falling to top-seeded Rochester 11-1 in the second round Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers snagged a late lead and defeated the Norsemen 6-1 on Friday. The game was tied at one with the Pioneers batting in the top of the sixth when
Meltavis Robertson singled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.
Mesabi Range opened up scoring in the first inning. Brandon Lind singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Pioneers tied things up at one when
Abel Rodriguez doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Robertson got the win for the Pioneers. The pitcher surrendered one run on two hits over seven innings, striking out eight.
Joe Berset took the loss for the Norsemen. The pitcher surrendered six runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one.
The Pioneers hit one home run on the day. Rodriguez went deep in the sixth inning.
The Pioneers watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 11-1 loss to top-seeded Rochester Friday afternoon. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Keaden Kempert and
Abel Rodriguez singled to lead off the game and they both moved into scoring position on a double steal with one out in the inning. Kempert scored on a sacrifice fly by
Marcos Salazar.
The Pioneers' 1-0 lead would turn out to be their only lead of the game. The Yellowjackets answered with two runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth inning to take an 11-1 lead that ended the game when the Pioneers were unable to answer in the top of the fifth.
Carter Anderson took the loss for NCTC Pioneers. The pitcher lasted one and one-third innings, allowing six hits and five runs while striking out one and walking one.
Alec Dietl got the win for the Yellowjackets. He allowed one run on four hits and he struck out eight batters.
Up next for the Pioneers is an elimination game against Itasca at 2 p.m. today.
