Brainerd, Minn. - The 2022 softball season at Northland Community & Technical College came to end Saturday with 16-2 loss to top-seeded Central Lakes in the opening round of the four-team double elimination Region 13B Tournament. The Pioneers were slated to play third-seeded Itasca in an elimination game Saturday afternoon, but they were forced to forfeit after injuries kept them from starting the game with the required nine players.
Central Lakes improved to 3-0 against the Pioneers in 2022. The Pioneers fell to 7-12 with the loss. Seven of Northland's 12 losses came against Central Lakes and Itasca, who finished first and second, respectively, in the MCAC Northern Division standings this year.
The Pioneers were a bit of a Cinderella story this season. They started the year with nine healthy players and they made it through a weather-shortened regular season with nine players. The Pioneers qualified for the postseason a day before the region tournament with a walk-off 11-10 win over Hibbing Friday afternoon, in a game that started two days earlier as part of a double header.
The Raiders scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and were up 2-1 going into the bottom of the third when they took a commanding 10-1 lead with an eight-run third inning. The Raiders added six more runs in the fourth and got the early stoppage when the Pioneers only managed to score a single run in the top of the fifth.
Addie Sanford picked up the win for the Raiders. She threw a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits, with five strikeouts.
Shawna Larson took the loss for the Pioneers. She completed two innings and allowed four runs on five hits.
The 2022 Northland softball had four players hit over .370 on the season –
Grace Minten .474;
Desiree Lawrence .453;
Kasey Stegman .397; and Justin Pratcshler .377. Pratschler led the team in doubles with eight. Stegman led the Pioneers in triples with five; and Stegman and Minten tied for the team lead in home runs with two each. Pioneers with double-digit runs batted in include Minten, 19; Stegman, 15; Pratcshler, 14; Lawrence,13; and
Mara Davis, 11.
Defensively, the Pioneers had three players end the season with a fielding percentage of .950 or better. They included: Pratcschler .974; Davis .965; and
Felicity Andress .950. Pitching leaders for the Pioneers
