Eveleth, Minn. - The Northland baseball team split a double header against Rainy River Monday afternoon, winning 12-9 in game one, before falling 5-3 in five innings in game two. The MCAC Northern Division games were moved to Eveleth after both teams' home fields were unplayable due to weekend rain.
The Voyageurs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings in game one, but the Pioneers had the last laugh with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth to take a 12-9 lead that would hold up for the win.
David Perez homered on the first pitch of his bat in the eighth to drive in three runs and put the Pioneers back in front. Perez went 4-for-5 on the day, with a single in the first, a home run in the third, a double in the seventh and home run in the eighth.
Gannon Kempert led the Pioneers to victory on the hill. The righthander allowed three hits and three runs over two and a third innings, striking out one and walking one.
Antonio Garcia took the loss for the Voyageurs. The righthander lasted two innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out two and walking zero.
Emilio Gonzalez started the game for Rainy River. The pitcher lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out six.
Joseph Lopez started the game for the Pioneers. Lopez allowed eight hits and six runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out two Pioneers. The Pioneers hit three home runs on the day. Perez went for the long ball in the third and eighth innings.
Meltavis Robertson went yard in the seventh inning.
The Pioneers racked up 15 hits. Perez,
Abel Rodriguez, Freddy Landman, and
Keaden Kempert all managed multiple hits for the Pioneers.
Rainy River had 11 hits in the game. Mateo Sierras, Diego Ramos, and Ethan Bergen each racked up multiple hits for the Voyageurs.
Game two was scheduled for just five innings due to a high school game being scheduled to follow its conclusion.
Rainy River trailed 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning when John Michael Gonzalez Jr. homered on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs and giving the Voyageurs a 4-3 lead.
The Pioneers, who were the home team in game two, were unable to answer and the Voyageurs claimed the 4-3 win.
The Pioneers lost despite out-hitting the Voyageurs 6-3.
Jake Ouweneel was the winning pitcher for Rainy River. The righthander pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two and walking one.
Meltavis Robertson took the loss for the Pioneers. Robertson went five innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out eight.
Juan Alcoverde started the game for Rainy River. Alcoverde surrendered three runs on six hits over four innings, striking out five.
Abel Rodriguez led the Pioneers with two hits in three at bats. As a team, the Pioneers stole four bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Freddy Landman led the way with two. Gonzalez Jr. went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Voyageurs in hits.
