Ely, Minn. - The Northland baseball team wrapped up a two-day, four-game road trip to the Iron Range with a double header split against the Vermilion Ironmen in Ely.
The Ironmen scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead, but the Pioneers answered with six runs in the fourth on their way to an 8-6 win in Tuesday's opener.
The offensive firepower by Vermillion was led by Dillon Tolen, Zach Clerey, Graham Porter, and Terren Susita, who all drove in runs as part of a six-hit day for the Ironmen.
In the six-run fourth,
Meltavis Robertson hit a solo homer and
Abel Rodriguez singled on a 1-0 count to score two runs.
David Perez homered on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs, and the Pioneers added a run on an Ironmen error.
Carter Anderson was credited with the victory for the Pioneers. The righthander allowed one hit and zero runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five.
Jacob Worly took the loss for Vermillion. He allowed ten hits and eight runs over seven innings, striking out six.
Humberto Montemayor started the game for the Pioneers and lasted two and a third innings, allowing five hits and six runs while striking out four.
Robertson,
Keaden Kempert, and
Gabe Montilla all managed multiple hits as part of a 10-hit day for the Pioneers. The Pioneers were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.
Vermilion took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two and added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-0 win over the Pioneers.
The Ironmen scored their first runs on a double by Graham Porter and a fielder's choice by Zach Clerey in the first inning.
Dillon Tolen got the win for Vermillion. The ace surrendered zero runs on one hit over seven innings, striking out seven.
Augustin Sanchez took the loss for NCTC Pioneers. The lefty went seven innings, allowing five runs on five hits and striking out two.
Gabe Montilla recorded the Pioneers' only hit in the second inning.
The Pioneers wrap up the regular season today with double header against Hibbing. Those games, originally scheduled to be played at Pioneer Field, have been moved to Greenbush due to unplayable field conditions in Thief River Falls.
