Greenbush, Minn. - The Northland softball team was swept in a two-game series against the Itasca Vikings Monday afternoon. The two-game series was moved from Northland's home field in Thief River Falls to Greenbush High School due to the Pioneers' field being saturated from weekend rain.
The Vikings, who were visitors on the scoreboard in both games, claimed a back and forth opener 16-9 and they completed the sweep with a 10-0 win in five-innings.
Game one featured a pair of lead changes and a lot of scoring. The Pioneers plated three runs in the bottom of the first. The Vikings took the lead with four runs in the third and they added four more in the fourth to go in front 8-3. The Pioneers answered with a four-spot of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 8-7. The Vikings broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth to go in front 15-7. Both teams would add runs in the final two innings with 16-9 standing as the final score.
The Pioneers had big several strong offensive performances.
Kasey Stegman,
Justine Pratcshler,
Grace Minten and
Desiree Lawrence all hit home runs for the Pioneers, with Lawrence adding a triple.
Hailee Harris took the loss for the Pioneers in game one, allowing 10 earned runs in four innings of work.
The Pioneers struggled offensively in game two. They were held to just three hits in the five-inning contest. Lawrence, Pratschler and
Kylie Shetler collected hits in game two.
Lawrence allowed eight runs on eight hits to take the loss in game two.
The Pioneers (4-8) and Vikings (18-11) will play again today in Grand Rapids. Game times are 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. for the MCAC Northern Division double header.
