Pioneers' winning streak reaches five

The Northland volleyball team won its fourth and fifth consecutive matches during a two-match road trip to Cloquet and Hibbing Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17. The Pioneers opened with trip with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Fond du Lac Tribal College. The Pioneers claimed the opening set 25-14. They nearly blanked the Thunder in the second set, winning 25-2, and they completed the sweep with a 25-12 win in the third set. 

Madison Witte led all Pioneer hitters with 14 kills. Setter Chloe Kuznia recorded 26 assists on the night. Grace Loeslie finished with five service aces and tied Haven Becket for the team lead in digs with eight each. 

Things were a little more challenging for the Pioneers on Sunday as they traveled to Hibbing to face the Minnesota North College - Hibbing Cardinals. The Pioneers won the first two sets by identical 25-15 scores. The Cardinals dug-in to claim the third set 25-23, but the Pioneers took care of business in set number four with a 25-22 win to clinch their fifth consecutive win. 

Witte added an impressive 24 kills to her Friday night total of 14. Giselle Cole continued her strong freshman season with 17 kills. Kuznia recorded 44 assists and 13 digs. Beckett and Loeslie also reached double figures in digs with 16 and 10, respectively. 

The Pioneers improved to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the weekend sweep. Fond du Lac fell to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play with losses to Northland and Rainy River on the weekend. Hibbing fell to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play with losses to Alexandria and Northland. 

The Pioneers return home Wednesday to host Minnesota North College - Rainy River (1-6, 1-5) at 6:30 p.m.
