The Northland Community & Technical College men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with Minnesota North College - Itasca in the second half of Wednesday night's game, with the Vikings claiming a 69-55 win over the Pioneers.
The Pioneers briefly held the lead on four separate occasions in the first half, the latest of which came with a 32-30 advantage following an
AJ Jennings three-pointer with 1:45 remaining in the half. The Vikings ended the half on a 6-0 run and took a 36-32 lead into the locker room.
The Pioneers played from behind the entire second half. They got to within one point of the Vikings, trailing 39-38 with 16:01 left to play, but the Vikings took control of the game with an 11-2 run to go in front 50-40. The Vikings added to their lead down the stretch to close out the game.
Itasca's Donte Whymns led all scorers with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Top scorers for the Pioneers were
D'Mani Nettles and
Malic Osei-Tutu with 14 points each.
The Vikings improved to 3-0 in MCAC North play and 7-11 overall with the win. The Pioneers fell to 0-3 in MCAC North play and 3-8 overall.
The Pioneers return to the court Saturday, traveling to Cloquet to face Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
