The Northland men's basketball team dropped its third consecutive MCAC Northern Division game Wednesday night with a 71-66 loss to Minnesota North College-Hibbing.
The Pioneers seemed like they were well on their way to snapping a two-game losing streak for the majority of Wednesday night's game against the Cardinals. The Pioneers led by as many as nine points in the first half and they took a 33-27 lead into the the locker room.
The Cardinals opened the second half on an 8-4 run to get within two of the Pioneers with 17:27 left to play. The Pioneers regrouped with a timeout and went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 10 points with 15:35 left to play.
The Cardinals chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the game 57 and took a 58-57 lead on a three-point play by Ray Washington.
The Pioneers stayed within a possession down the stretch. They trailed 69-66 with a minute to go when
Malic Osei-Tutu's potential game-tying three-pointer was off the mark.
The Cardinals went up by the final margin on the ensuing possession on a Washington layup.
Northland's
AJ Jennings led all scorers with 20 points.
Izeon Aaron and Ashawn Philips also finished in double figures for the Pioneers with 12 and 13 points, respectively. The Pioneers fell to 1-6 in MCAC North play and 4-11 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 1-6 in the North and 4-14 overall.
