The Northland Community & Technical College men's basketball team lost is fourth consecutive game Saturday in a 77-62 setback against Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College. The Pioneers had previously defeated the Thunder by scores of 74-67 on Dec. 31 during the Central Lakes Holiday Tournament, and 65-64 on the road in Cloquet.
The Pioneers were going for the regular season sweep Saturday in the Northland gym. The Pioneers fell behind early when the Thunder opened the game on a 9-2 run. The Pioneers got to within three points of the Thunder at 11-8 with 13:55 left in the first half, but the Thunder went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to go up by 10 points.
The Thunder led 24-19 with 7:39 left in the first half, before going on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to go up 33-19.
The Pioneers ended the half with a 9-6 run to make the score 39-28 at the break.
Slow starts to the second half have plagued the Pioneers during their recent losing streak. On Saturday, however, the Pioneers got the second half started with a 10-4 run that made the score 43-38 with 15:12 left to play.
The Pioneers' deficit ranged from five to eight points over the next five minutes before they eventually got to within two points of the Thunder at 51-49 with 9:11 left to play, and they were within a point at 54-53 with 7:13 remaining.
The Pioneers were unable to complete to comeback, however, as the Thunder pulled away with a 21-7 run over the last seven minutes of the game.
Fond du Lac's Kaden Hanson led all scorers with 21 points off the bench. Top scorers for Northland were
AJ Jennings, 19, Ashawn Philips, 14,
Jaelin Domingue 10, and
Izeon Aaron 10 points.
The Norhland men host the Mayville State JV on Tuesday night at 7:30, before hitting the road to play Minnesota North College-Vermilion (Friday at 7:30 p.m.) and Minnesota North College-Mesabi Range (Saturday at 3 p.m.)
