Pioneers beat Ironhawks, fall to Norse on road

The Northland volleyball team made short work of Minnesota North College - Vermilion Friday night in Ely, Minn., but struggled in a three set loss to Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range Saturday in Virginia, Minn. 

Riley Gust had 10 kills and Sunny Edin had 25 assists for the Pioneers in their 25-13, 25-12, 25-7 win over the Ironhawks Friday night. Giselle Cole added nine kills and Allyson Hart finished with 13 digs in the Pioneers' win. 

Things were much more difficult Saturday as the Pioneers faced a Lady Norse team that is tied for first in the Division with Central Lakes College. The Pioneers started slow against the Norse, dropping the first set 25-15. They were a little more competitive in the second set, but still fell by a score of 25-20. The Norse pulled away in the third set, winning 25-14, to complete the sweep and improve to 7-1 in division play and 14-4 overall. 

The Pioneers fell to 3-5 in division play and 9-9 overall. 

Playoff update
The Pioneers are currently fifth in the MCAC Northern Division with a 3-5 record. They trail MNC-Mesabi Range and Central Lakes at 7-1 each, Alexandria at 6-2 and MNC-Itasca at 3-3. The Pioneers and fourth place Vikings of MNC-Itasac are scheduled to meet twice during the two weeks of the season. The first meeting between the two teams is Wednesday, Oct. 4 in the Northland Gym. The teams will also face one-another Friday, Oct. 13 in Grand Rapids. 

Home games remaining
Three of the Pioneers' final six matches remaining will be at home. The Pioneers welcome MNC-Itasca Wednesday, Oct. 4. They host Alexandria on Oct. 11 and they wrap up the 2023 regular season at home Oct. 18 against MNC-Rainy River.
