The Northland Community & Technical College men's basketball team dropped its home opener 75-72 to Mayville State University JV Wednesday night. The Pioneers trailed by six at the half, 39-33, and as many as 11 points in the third quarter, before rallying to tie the game at 62 with 6:15 left to play.
The Pioneers tied the game on three more occasions before the Comets took a 74-69 lead with 1:10 left to play. Northland sophomore
Malic Osei-Tutu hit one his four three-point buckets on the night to get the Pioneers to within two with 47 seconds left. The Pioneers kept the Comets off the scoreboard on the ensuing possession and nearly forced a shot clock violation, but the Comets got a big offensive rebound with 16 seconds left.
Northland freshman
Shawndale King stole then ensuing inbounds pass and the ball was knocked out of bounds by the Comets near midcourt, with less than 10 seconds left. Osei-Tutu had a shot to tie the game with six seconds left, but the ball was knocked out of bounds. The Pioneers fouled Mayville's Layton Stroman with 1.8 seconds left. Stroman made the first of two free throws. Northland freshman Shawn Lynch collected the rebound and fired a potential game-tying shot from the Comets freethrow line. The ball hit the rafters and fell to the floor to end the game.
Osei-Tutu, 14,
Jason Jack, 13, and King, 10 points, finished in double figures for the Pioneers.
Up next for the Northland men's basketball team is a trip to Coon Rapids, Minn., to play in the Anoka-Ramsey Tournament Nov. 10-11.
