Decorah, Iowa - 

The Northland men's wrestling team traveled to Decorah, Iowa Saturday to compete in the prestigious Luther College Open, which featured more than 500 combined entries in its elite and silver divisions.

The Pioneers were led by freshman Josiah Crandall, who placed fifth in the season-opening Jim Fox Invitational and nearly made it two-for-two with a blood-round loss on Saturday. Crandall received a bye in the opening round and pinned Robert Vikobratovich in round number two to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. He lost by fall to eventual runner-up Dominic Ducato of St. Cloud State in the quarterfinals. Crandall needed a win to stay alive and earn a spot in the top-eight, but came up short in an 8-6 loss to Khadyn Jacobs of Augustana (IL) in the consolation quarterfinals. 

Also putting together a strong showing for the Pioneers was unattached wrestler Christian Kirchner. After an opening-round bye, Kirchner dropped his opening match to Julian Garnica of Wartburg by 19-4 technical fall. He battled back to pin Jar'kavin Pennell of Nebraska Wesleyan in the second round of consolations and he reached the blood round with a 14-7 win over Danny Gaskill of Wisconsin-Whitewater, before being eliminated with a loss by fall to Andrew Larson of Rochester in the consolation quarterfinals. 

Also competing for the Pioneers were Elijah Miranda and Lucas Urness at 174 and 285, respectively, and Josh Herrera, unattached at 174.
