The Northland women's basketball team opened its season with a 1-1 showing at the Anoka-Ramsey Community College November Classic. The Pioneers started fast in Friday night's opening round with a dominant 55-33 win over St. Cloud Technical & Community College.

Freshman Tiyana Schwinghammer was the only Pioneer to reach double figures in the low-scoring game as she finished with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double in her first collegiate game. Schwinghammer also finished the contest with seven steals. Other leading scorers for the Pioneers were sophomore Emma Osborn with nine points, freshman Josie Iverson with eight points and sophomore Shavonda Bender with eight points. 

The Pioneers were back in action less than 15 hours later against a familiar foe in tournament-host Anoka-Ramsey. The Pioneers and Golden Rams met four times a year ago. The Golden Rams won three of the four meetings, including a 62-47 win over the Pioneers in the NJCAA Region XIIIB semifinals. The fifth-ranked Rams got off to a fast start Saturday and led 37-18 after one half was completed. The Pioneers were still down 51-35 when the fourth quarter began, but they rallied to get within four points of the Golden Rams, 57-53, with 44 seconds left. The Pioneers were unable to get any closer down the stretch as the Rams hung on for a 61-56 win. 

Schwinghammer recorded her second double-double of the young season with 22 points and 12 rebounds. She also added a pair of assists. Iverson also reached double figures with 12 points, while adding a pair of rebounds and assists. 

Up next for the Northland women is a 5:30 p.m home game against Dakota College at Bottineau.
