The Northland men's basketball team was able to keep pace with the Minnesota State Community & Techncial College Spartans for one half Saturday, but the Spartans pulled away in the final 20 minutes to take the contest 75-43.
The Pioneers trailed early but stayed within a couple of possessions of the Spartans. The Pioneers tied the game at 17-17 on a Tavon Pettaway free throw with 8:03 left in the half, and they took a 19-17 lead, their first lead of the contest, with a pair of made free throws by
Randy Harris with 7:14 left in the half. A
Shawn Greene layup with 6:38 left in the half gave the Pioneers a 21-17 lead, which would turn out to be their biggest lead of the game.
The Spartans tied the game 23-23 with a three-point bucket by Mason Muir with 4:18 left in the half. Muir's three-pointer would jump-start a 12-0 run by the Spartans that gave them a 32-23 edge as the teams headed into their respective locker rooms at the half.
The Spartans stayed hot and opened the second half with a 14-1 run over the first 5:23 of the second half that made the score 46-24. Overall, the Spartans outscored the Pioneers 43-20 in the second half.
Freshmen
Shawn Greene and
Joey Nimmer were the Pioneers' top scorers with eight points each.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday, Nov. 21 against the University of Jamestown JV. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
