Minot, N.D. -
The Northland men's wrestling team dropped a pair of duals at Minot State University Friday, falling to the University of Saskatchewan 30-12 in the opening dual and host Minot State 59-0 in the nightcap.
The Pioneers were open at 125 and 149 Friday, as
Josiah Crandall and
Ethan Horn battle injuries. Both wrestlers are expected to return to the lineup soon. The Pioneers are also expected to add a couple more wrestlers, who are currently ineligible, at semester break.
While the Pioneers will come close to filling their lineup in the second half of the season, they were shorthanded Friday with six open weights. The Huskies accepted three forfeits for 18 points, which proved to be the difference in the dual.
Both teams were open at 125 and 133 pounds.
Drake Buechler and Donovan Nevdorf got the scoring going for the Huskies with wins by forfeit at 141 and 149.
The Pioneers got on the board with a second period win by fall from freshman
Mitchell Christen over Cole Mohan at 157.
After a double forfeit at 165, the Pioneers tied the dual meet score with a win by fall from
Elijah Miranda over Jared Steinley at 174.
The Huskies took an 18-12 lead with a win by forfeit from Dilon Hammer at 184.
The Pioneers needed to win the final two matches to win the dual, but dropped both. At 197, Judah Arthurs of Saskatchewan pinned
Dexter Pollard; and at 285, Owen McGillvary pinned
Lucas Urness.
Dual meet number two was a route from the start as NCAA Division II Minot State University used its regular starting lineup and won all 10 weight classes, including six by forfeit. Also picking up wins for the Beavers were Kelby Armstrong over
Mitchell Christen by fall at 157; Brendan Barnes by 17-2 technical fall over
Elijah Miranda at 174; Cannon Potts over
Dexter Pollard by fall at 197; and 2023 NCAA Division II national qualifier Jake Swirple over
Lucas Urness at heavyweight.
The Northland women's team also competed in Friday's Beaver Bash Duals with just two healthy wrestlers.
Arionna Beatty and
Shelby Sherman combined to go 0-9 against opponents from Minot State, University of Jamestown, Dickenson State and the University of Saskatchewan
