Thief River Falls, Minn. -
The Northland women's basketball team was dominant on both ends of the court while sweeping a two-game weekend homestand Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers opened the weekend with an 85-40 win over Minnesota State Community & Technical College Spartans, and they wrapped up the weekend with a 76-35 win over St. Cloud Technical & Community College Cyclones on Saturday.
Both games were rematches from earlier this year. The Pioneers defeated the Cyclones 55-33 in their season-opener on Nov. 10 and they defeated the Spartans 70-52 eight days later.
The Pioneers got off to a blazing start against the Spartans Friday night. Their offense was on full display in the opening quarter, with 31 first-quarter points and an 18-point after 10 minutes were in the books. The Pioneers were strong offensively in the second quarter as well with 23 points, but the teams' defense was even more impressive after holding the Spartans to just five points.
Trailing 54-18 at the half, the Spartans made up some ground in the third quarter with an 18-13 scoring edge, but the Pioneers regained the upper hand in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Spartans 18-4 over the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Pioneers got scoring contributions from all nine players in uniform for Friday night's game, with
Emma Osborn leading the way with 16 points, including four three-point buckets.
Tiyana Schwinghammer, 15,
Josie Iverson, 14, and
Riley Mooney, 13 points, all finished in double figures for the Pioneers. Leading rebounders for the Pioneers were Schwinghammer with eight, and Mooney and Iverson with seven apiece.
The Pioneers once again got off to a fast start Saturday against the Cyclones, with a 21-8 lead after one quarter of play and a 46-16 lead at the half.
The Pioneers continued to add to their lead in the third with an 18-9 edge over the course of the 10-minute quarter, before slowing things down in the fourth. Osborn connected on 8-of-19 three-point attempts on her way to a game-high 24 points.
Josie Iverson was the only other Pioneer to reach double figures with 11 points.
Another top-five opponent on the schedule
The Pioneers travel to Minnesota West on Thursday and Friday for the Minnesota West Christmas Tournament. The Pioneers face the second-ranked Minnesota West Bluejays Thursday night, before wrapping up the two-day tournament against Dakota College at Bottineau.
