Pioneers upset second-ranked Blue Jays

Worthington, Minn. -

The Northland women's basketball team upset second-ranked Minnesota West 81-53 in the first game of a two-day tournament in Worthington (Minn.) Thursday.  The Blue Jays are known for their aggressive defense, with a full-court press that produces a lot of turnovers and points in transition. The Pioneers were close to pulling off the upset a year ago, when the Blue Jays claimed a 72-67 win in Thief River Falls.

The Pioneers beat the press on Thursday night and took advantage of some wide-open looks at the basket. The Pioneers outpaced the Blue Jays 19-17 in the opening period and built a double-digit lead in the second period. The Pioneers held the Blue Jays to just 11 points the second quarter and led 45-28 at the break. It was more of the same in the third quarter, as the Pioneers outscored the Blue Jays 24-12 to take a 69-40 lead into the final period.

The Pioneers had a balanced scoring effort with four players scoring in double figures. Riley Mooney led the way with 19 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Emma Osborn scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Tiyana Schwinghammer scored 17 points, with eight rebounds and a team-high five assists; and Shavonda Bender paired a 13-point night with eight rebounds. Point guard Josie Iverson was held to just four points due to the nature of the Blue Jays' full-court press, but she still had big impact on the game with 12 assists to go with nine rebounds and eight steals.

Olivia Hayenga was the Blue Jays' top scorer with 19 points.

The Pioneers wrapped up the first semester of the 2023-24 season with a 76-59 win over Dakota College at Bottineau on Friday in Worthington. The win was the Pioneers' second over the Jacks this year. The Pioneers also defeated the Jacks 83-56 on Nov. 14. The rematch was not as close as the 17-point final spread would indicate. The Pioneers built a 20-12 lead through one-quarter of play and held a 49-29 lead at the break. The Jacks outscored the Pioneers 30-27 in the second half, but the outcome was never in doubt as the Pioneers improved to 9-3 with the win.

After being held to just four points against the Blue Jays, Iverson led the Pioneers in scoring with 18 points and seven assists against the Jacks. Schwinghammer recorded her fourth double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds; and Osborn scored 12 points.

The Pioneers return to action Friday, Dec. 29 against Riverland in the first day of the two-day Central Lakes Holiday Tournament. The Pioneers will get a second look at the Golden Rams of Anoka-Ramsey Community College Dec. 30 for the second day of the Central Lakes tournament.
