The Northland men's basketball team dropped the opening game of a two-game road trip 84-62 at Rochester Community & Technical College Friday night before salvaging a weekend split with an 81-75 win over Western Tech Saturday afternoon in Lacrosse, Wis. 

The Yellowjackets held the lead for over 39 minutes of Friday night's game against the Pioneers. The Pioneers trailed 49-23 at the half and as many as 30 points in the second half. The Pioneers got to within 17 points of the Yellowjackets with 1:130 left to play, but the Yellowjackets scored five unanswered points for the final 20 seconds to conclude the scoring.

Randy Harris, 17, Sean Lynch, 11, and Malic Osei-Tutu, 10, were the top scorers for the Pioneers. 

The Pioneers trailed by as many as 10 points during an otherwise competitive opening half against the Cavaliers Saturday in Lacrosse. The Pioneers were down 42-34 but went on an 18-10 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to tie the game at 52-52. A Carey Davis bucket with 9:59 remaining gave the Pioneers a 58-56 lead that was their first since the midway point of the first half. Davis' bucket was part of a 12-0 run by the Pioneers that saw them take a 66-56 lead with 8:35 left to play. 

The Pioneers were comfortably up 72-60 with 6:26 left to play when the Cavaliers went on a 9-0 run that quickly made things uncomfortable. The Pioneers regained control over the final four minutes and made enough free throws to hold on for the six-point win. 

Four Pioneers reached double figures, led by a 26-point, 17-rebound performance from Makhi Mahon. Osei-Tutu scored 17 points, Davis scored 12, and Shawndale King scored 10 points. 

The Pioneers will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night against Lake Region State College.
