The Northland women's basketball team fell 72-50 at top-ranked Rochester Community & Technical College Friday night but bounced back with a dominant 103-29 win over Western Tech Saturday in Lacrosse, Wis.
The Pioneers started strong Friday against the Yellowjackets with an 11-2 lead four minutes into the contest. The Yellowjackets battled back and took their first lead, 14-13, with 3:42 to go in the opening quarter.
The Pioneers trailed 19-16 at the end of the first, but opened the second quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 24-23 lead with 7:13 left in the half. Both teams struggled offensively for a stretch before Kayla James hit a three-pointer giving the Yellowjackets a 26-24 lead with 5:42 left in the half. James' three-pointer would end up giving the Yellowjackets the lead for good as they closed out the half on an 8-2 run.
The Pioneers were down by five, 31-26, to start the third quarter, but their offensive struggles would continue as the Yellowjackets pulled away with a 22-10 scoring edge in the third quarter and 19-14 edge in the fourth.
