The Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team avenged its only MCAC North loss Saturday with a 63-49 win over the Central Lakes Raiders in the Northland Gym.
In the first meeting, the Pioneers led 23-20 at the break but were outscored 39-29 in the second half en route to a 59-52 win for the Raiders. The Pioneers leaned on their defense in Saturday's rematch. The Pioneers led 13-6 after one quarter of play and they got their offense going in the second to build a 30-16 halftime advantage.
The Pioneers' lead grew to 24 points with a little over five minutes left to play, before the Raiders cut the final deficit to 14 points.
Northland sophomore
Emma Osborn put on a show with 32 point, with 27 of those points coming on three-pointers. Osborn also had five rebounds and four assists on the day.
No other Pioneers reached double figures on the day, with
Lily Bayne,
Kasey Stegman and
Riley Mooney each finishing the game with eight points.
The Pioneers previously dropped a 59-52 decision to the Raiders in Brainerd on Jan. 18. The Pioneers and Raiders are now tied atop the MCAC North with identical 6-1 conference records. Both teams are on track to qualify for postseason play, but the final standings will determine which regional each team is assigned. The MCAC North champion will receive the number one seed in the Region 13B Tournament, while the runner-up will be seeded second in Region 13A. If both teams end the regular season with the same conference record, then a coin toss will be used to determine seeding.
The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday night against Gogebic Community College in a neutral site game at Hibbing Community College. The opening tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
