Northland Community & Technical College women's basketball team clinched a share of first place in the MCAC North with a 94-54 win over Rainy Minnesota North College - Rainy River Saturday in the Northland gym.
The Voyageurs were poised for the upset early and traded buckets with the Pioneers for the first half of the opening quarter. The Pioneers led 15-12 with 4:17 left in the first quarter. They Pioneers ended the quarter on a 11-0 run that contunued into the second quarter and reached 23 unanswered points for a score of 38-12. The Voyageurs finally answered with a three-pointer with 4:36 left in the half.
The Pioneers led 49-19 at the half and they kept the pace up in the second half with a 26-14 scoring advantage in the third to take a 75-33 led through three quarters, before backing off slightly in the fourth.
Six Pioneers finished in double figures, led by 15 points each from freshmen
Lily Bayne and
Emma Osborn. Also in double figures were freshmen
Riley Mooney and
Shavonda Bender, with 14 points each; freshman
Ashley Gereau with 13 points and sophomore
Chloe Kuznia with 12 points. Mooney added 12 rebounds to her 14-point outing for a double-double.
The Pioneers are a relatively young team this year, but two sophomores played their final games in the Northland gym. Kuznia and
Kasey Stegman were honored before the game. Stegman was held to just two points in her final home game, but she grabbled seven rebounds and finished with four steals in the contest.
After splitting their head-to-head meetings and sharing identical 7-1 conference records, the Pioneers and Central Lakes Raiders finished as co-champions of the MCAC North. For postseason seeding purposes, the tie had to be broken with a coin toss. The Pioneers won the coin toss to earn the number one seed in the Region 13B Tournament.
