Coon Rapids, Minn. -
Anoka-Ramsey Community College pulled away over the final 10 minutes to defat Northland Community & Technical College 62-47 in an NJCAA Region XIIIB women's basketball semifinal game Saturday night.
The Golden Rams led at each stop in the action, with a 15-12 advantage through one quarter of play, a 24-23 edge at halftime and a 40-37 lead through 30 minutes of play. The Golden Rams opened the fourth quarter on a 13-4 run that put them in front 53-41.
Saturday's game was the fourth meeting of the season between the Pioneers and Golden Rams. Three of the four meetings took place on the Golden Rams home court and the Golden Rams were victorious all three times. The Pioneers' lone win against the Golden Rams came in a neutral site meeting Dec. 31 at Central Lake College in Brainerd.
The Pioneers have been a strong three-point shooting club this season. They entered Saturday's game with a single-season record 185 made three-pointers but they struggled as a team from beyond the arc Saturday, going 3-for-17. Team leader
Emma Osborn entered Saturday's game tied for the school record for made threes as an individual with 90. She broke the record Saturday, but only went 1-for-5 from three point land and was held to just five points overall after averaging 16.5 points per game during the season.
Leading scorers for the Pioneers on Saturday were
Riley Mooney with 13 points and
Lily Bayne with 11.
The loss likely ends the season for the Northland women. The Pioneers were MCAC North co-champions with a 7-1 record in conference play and 13-10 mark overall.
Anoka-Ramsey carried the momentum of Saturday night's win over into Sunday with a 59-58 upset victory over second-seeded Minnesota West Community & Technical College. Minnesota West defeated Minnesota North College-Rainy River 123-48 in the other Region XIIIB semifinal.
In Region XIIIA, Rochester and Riverland claimed semifinal victories, with Rochester dominating Minnesota North College - Itasca 123-46 and Riverland defeated Central Lakes 71-62. Riverland claimed the championship and handed top-ranked Rochester it's first loss 67-60 in Sunday's championship game.
