The Northland Community & Technical College men's basketball team dropped a pair or road games against MCAC North foes during a weekend road trip to the Iron Range. The Northland men fell to Minnesota North College-Vermilion in Ely Friday night by a score of 70-52, before concluding the road trip with a 71-57 loss to Minnesota North College-Mesabi Range Saturday afternoon.
A.J. Jennings and
Jaelin Domingue finished in double figures Friday night for the Pioneers, with Jennings scoring 17 points, with four rebounds and an assist. Domingue scored 10 points off the bench. The Pioneers' top rebounder was Ashawn Philips, who grabbed nine boards to with eight points.
Trailing 35-22 at the half, the Pioneers opened the second half on an 8-1 to get to within six points of the Ironhawks. The Pioneers couldn't sustain the momentum, however, as the Ironhawks pulled away for the 18-point win.
The Pioneers' struggles continued Saturday against the Norse. The host Norse built a 44-27 advantage through one half of play before maintaining the lead in the second half for the 14-point win.
Domingue and Philips led the scoring charge for the Pioneers, with Domingue scoring 21 points and Philips just missing out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Pioneers (1-9), 4-15) return to their home court Wednesday night to face Minnesota North College-Itasca (6-4, 10-15) for the first game of a two-game homestand. The Pioneers and Vikings square off at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers are also home Saturday against Central Lakes College at 3 p.m. The Raiders are 14-8 overall and tied for the top spot in the MCAC North with an 8-2 conference record.
