Thief River Falls, Minn. -
The Northland Men's basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 78-72 win over Minnesota North College-Itasca Wednesday night at the Northland Gym.
The Pioneers struggled to get the shots to fall early and trailed 7-0 with 15:15 left in the first half. There was no panic for the Pioneers, however, with a three-pointer by
Tyrel Richardson hitting a layup by
Izeon Aaron and another three by Richardson to give the Pioneers an 8-7 lead with 14:29 left in the half.
The Pioneers took the lead for good with a two-point bucket by Richardson that put the Pioneers in front 15-13 with 11:26 left in the half. The Pioneers led by as many as six points in the opening half and they took a 37-32 lead into the locker room.
The 2022-23 season has been marred by injuries for the Pioneers and the team's lack of depth has typically shown up in the second half. The Pioneers started the second half the way they ended the first on Wednesday night. They were up 50-44 at the 15-minute mark and the lead ballooned to 17 points, 65-48 at the 10-minute mark.
The Pioneers' biggest lead on the night was a 19-point advantage, 72-53, with just under seven minutes left in the ballgame.
With a 1-9 mark against MCAC North Opponents coming into Wednesday night's game, the Pioneers chances at making the postseason are almost non-existent. The Vikings, however, entered play with a 6-4 in conference play. They are in the thick of the playoff race and they did not go away quietly Wednesday night.
The Vikings went on a 19-3 run to make the score 75-72 with just over a minute left to play, but they couldn't get any more shots to fall in the final minute as the Pioneers held on for the 76-72 win.
Wednesday's win was a true team win, with six of the seven Pioneers in uniform finishing in double figures.
Jaelin Domingue led the way with 16 points.
A.J. Jennings finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Tyrel Richardson scored 13 points, inclulding three big three-point buckets that helped put the Pioneers in front in the first half. Rah'meen Harris and
Izeon Aaron scored 12 points each and
Malic Osei-Tutu finished with 10 points.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday against MCAC North-leading Central Lakes at 3 p.m. in the Northland Gym.
