Thief River Falls, Minn. - 

Points were hard to come by early for the Northland women's basketball team in its MCAC North home game against the Minnesota North College-Itasca Vikings Wednesday night. The Pioneers scored just one point in the first three and a half minutes of the game and they trailed 4-3 at the six-minute mark of the opening period. It would end up being the Vikings final lead of the night.

The teams took turns scoring over the next four minutes. The Pioneers went on a 6-0 run to go in front 9-4, but the Vikings continued to answer. The teams were deadlocked 11-11, before the Pioneers finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run over the final 2:17.

The Pioneers stayed hot in the second period, exploding for 37 points and a 55-21 lead at the break. They added 22 points in the third quarter and finished with 15 in the fourth to get the lopsided win. 

The Pioneers showcased their depth with six players reaching double figures on the night. Freshman Shavonda Bender dominated the paint with a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double. Also reaching double figures for the Pioneers were Lily Bayne, 14, Riley Mooney 12, Chloe Kuznia 11, Kasey Stegman, 11 and Ashley Gereau, 10. Emma Osborn, the Pioneers leading scorer on the season with 16.4 points per game, came close to making it seven players in double figures as she finished with nine points. 

Cass Dahn was the Vikings' top scorer with 14 points. 

The Pioneers improved to 11-9 overall and 5-1 against MCAC North opponents. 

Up next for the Pioneers is a showdown against MCAC North-leading Central Lakes College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Northland Gym. The Raiders are 13-6 overall and 6-0 against teams in the MCAC North.
