Pioneers take three of four from Spartans

Mata throws no-hitter in game three of series

Joseph Lopez threw a shutout to lead Northland past Minnesota State Community & Technical College 11-0 to open a two-day, four game series between the teams in Wakefield, Neb.
The Pioneers opened up scoring in the first inning on an Isaac Lopez single. The Pioneers put added three more runs in the fourth inning. The offensive onslaught by the Pioneers was led by Keaden Kempert, Lopez, and Odhan  Manhas, who all drove in runs. 
David Perez added a home run in the third inning. Overall, the Pioneers had 12 hits in the game, with Connor  Hoyt, Lopez, Perez, and Abel  Rodriguez each managing multiple hits for the Pioneers. Hoyt led the Pioneers with three hits in four at bats. 
Defensively, the Pioneers were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Matt  Zepeda made the most plays with  six.
Game 2
Northland watched Friday's game  two slip away early and couldn't recover in a 13-6 loss to MState Friday.  The Spartans scored on a home run by Mike Short in the first inning. The Pioneers answered with an RBI single from Abel Rodriguez to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the first, and the Spartans regained the lead for good on a home run by Ben Monson in the second inning. 
Trailing 12-2, the Pioneers put up three runs in the fourth inning.  
Aidan O'Brien got the start for MState and went four innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out five and walking one.
Odhan Manhas toed the rubber for Northland and lasted three innings, allowing four hits and five runs while striking out three and walking zero. Noah Warne threw four innings out of the bullpen.
The Spartans did most of their damage via the long ball with five home runs on the day. Logan Pulju had a dinger in the third inning. Mike Short went deep in the first and fourth innings. Luke Ruter went for the long ball in the fourth inning. Ben Monson put one out in the second inning.
The Pioneers totaled 11 hits in the game two loss.  Connor  Hoyt, Rodriguez, and Kempert all managed multiple hits.  Rodriguez and Hoyt each collected three hits to lead the Pioneers.  Lopez led the Pioneers with two stolen bases.
Game 3
Issac Mata was brilliant on the mound on Saturday, throwing a no-hitter to lead Northland past MState 14-0. Mata walked just two batters and struck out five in a five-inning complete game. 
Connor Hoyt was the offensive hero for the Pioneers with four runs batted in. Hoyt went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in runs on a home run in the second and a triple in the fifth.
The Pioneers scored single tallies in the first and third innings, with three runs in the seond, five in the fourth and four in the fifth. 
Logan Pulju led things off on the pitcher's mound for the Spartans. He was roughed up, allowing 10 earned runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings of work. 
The Pioneers racked up nine hits in the game, with Jonathan Campos, David  Perez, Manhas, and Hoyt each racking up multiple hits. 
The Pioneers were sure-handed defensively and didn't commit a single error. Matt  Zepeda made the most plays with  five.
Game 4
Mata added to his big day with a five-RBI day in game four to help push the Pioneers to a 14-5 win over the Spartans in the series finale. Mata drove in runs on a double in the fifth and a single in the seventh.
The Pioneers fired up the offense early with a three-run first inning. They added a single tally in the second and led 4-1 through four innings, before breaking the game open with a seven-run top of the fifth. David  Perez, Matt  Zepeda, Mata, and Keaden Kempert each had RBIs in the big inning.
Kempert was on the mound for the Pioneers and notched the win. He allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings of work. Kempert walked four batters and struck out nine. 
Beu Fetting started the game for Minnesota State Community And Technical College. The righthander surrendered nine runs on ten hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one.  Jackson Martin threw two and a third innings out of the bullpen.
The Pioneers launched one home run on the day in the form of a solo shot off the bat of Freddy Landman in the second inning.
Altogether, the Pioneers racked up 16 hits on the day.  Rodriguez, Kempert, Zepeda, Odhan Manhas, and Mata each managed multiple hits for the Pioneers.  Rodriguez led the Pioneers with three hits in four at bats. The Pioneers were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Zepeda had the most chances in the field with eight.
