Northland scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-7 lead and hung on to claim a 9-8 win in the first game of a scheduled softball double header against Minnesota North College - Rainy River.
The game, which was called after five innings, was held Saturday at Aurora High School due to both Rainy River and Northland's fields being unplayable. Game two was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Pioneers plated a pair of runs in the top of the first to go in front 2-0. The Voyageurs answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams scored again in the third, with the Pioneers putting up a single tally and the Voyageurs plating a pair of runs to tie the score.
The score was 3-3 before the Voyageurs pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning to go in front 7-3.
That set up the Pioneers for the big fifth inning rally.
Kennedy Wallace picked up the win for the Pioneers. She pitched all five innings, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits. She struck out three batters, but also walked three and surrendered three home runs.
Rainy River starter Zoe Adkins struck out four battters and allowed just four hits. She took the tough luck loss after being betrayed by her defense that committed [Continued from page 1] seven errors and allowed nine unearned runs to score. Offensive leaders for the Pioneers were
Sunny Edin, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, four RBI and a run scored;
Shavonda Bender, who went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, an RBI and three runs; and
Jordyn Berhow, who went 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
