Despite a 4-run deficit in the second inning, the Northland baseball team rallied and almost pulled off the come-from-behind win before falling by a 6-5 score to Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range on Sunday in the first game of a double header at Dakota County Community & Technical College in Rosemount.
The Pioneers trailed 4-0 after two innings were in the books, but they got three runs back in the third on RBI singles by Connor Hoy and Abel Rodriguez. An RBI single by David Perez tied the game 4-4 in the sixth inning.
The Norse answered with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead.
Down to their final at-bat, the Pioneers got one run back on an RBI groundout by by Jonathan Campos in the seventh, but they couldn't draw any closer.
Rodriguez led the Pioneers with two hits in three at-bats.
MNC-Mesabi Range scattered eight hits in the game. Cameron Pietrusa and Brandon Lind each collected multiple hits for the Norse.
The Pioneers got hot early and never looked back in an 8-1 victory in game two.
The Norse got their offense started in the second inning when Jameson Brand's sac fly brought in Alex Yrjanson. It would turn out to be their only lead of the game.
In the bottom of the second, the Pioneers tied things up at one when Issac Mata singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.
The Pioneers Varsity pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Keaden Kempert singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run, Abel Rodriguez singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run, and Isaac Lopez doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
JP Perez got the start for the Pioneers and allowed five hits and one run over six innings, striking out four.
Will Bittmann was on the hill for MNC-Mesabi Range Norse. The righty went three and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on ten hits and striking out four. Brand threw two and a-third innings in relief.
The Pioneers racked up 13 hits on the day. Keaden Kempert, David Perez, Mata, Lopez, and Rodriguez each had multiple hits. Freddy Landman, Abel Rodriguez Jr., Keadan Kempert, and Connor Hoyt each swiped two bags on the day.
Games three and four, which were scheduled to be played Monday at Century College in White Bear Lake, were cancelled due to a lack of available officials.
