The Northland softball team dropped a 23-19 decision to Mesabi Range in a game that was suspended three weeks earlier and dropped a pair of games against Itasca Community College in what amounted to a triple header on Friday, April 28.
The Pioneers trailed the Lady Norse 18-13 when their game was suspended on Friday, April 7. That game, which was the second game of a double header, began in the Blaine Dome in Blaine, Minn., and it was suspended when the teams ran over their scheduled timeslot to complete the game. It resumed Friday in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 18-15. They went on to score runs in each inning, but so did the Lady Norse, who went on to claim the 23-19 win.
Offensively, the Pioneers were led by
Justine Pratcshler, who belted a solo home run.
Shavonda Bender led the team with five runs batted-in, followed by
Jordyn Berhow,
Sunny Edin and
Reese Rustad with three each.
The Pioneers and Itasca Vikings were tied 3-3 through two and a half innings of game one. The Vikings broke the game open, however, with three runs in the bottom of the third and five runs in the bottom of the fourth to go in front 11-3. That score would end up being the final as the Vikings claimed game one via the eight-run rule.
Kennedy Wallace took the loss for the Pioneers after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits. Offensive highlights for the Pioneers include a triple by
Brooke Glad and RBIs from Bender and Wallace.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start in game two by plating three runs in the top of the first inning. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Vikings battled back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to go in front 4-3. The Vikings added a pair of runs in the second and 10 runs in the third to go in front 16-3, before wrapping things up early with an 18-4 win in five innings. Pratcshler took the loss for the Pioneers after allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits in her three innings of work. Offensively, Pratcshler led the way with a double and two RBIs. Bender and
Reese Rustad were also credited with RBIs for the Pioneers.
