A 5-4 loss to Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range in an MCAC Northern Division Tournament elimination game ended the 2023 season Saturday for the Northland softball team. A win for the Pioneers would have guaranteed a top-four finish and a spot in next weekend's Region 13B Tournament.
The Pioneers led 4-0 after two and a half innings were in the books. The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the first and added a run in the third inning.
The Norse answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Northland's top pitcher,
Kennedy Wallace, took the complete game loss. All five runs scored by the Norse were unearned. Wallace finished the season with a 4-4 win-loss record.
The Pioneers went 1-1 in the first day of the MCAC Northern Division Tournament on Friday. The third-seeded Pioneers opened the division tournament with a 7-6 win over Minnesota North College - Hibbing. The Pioneers led 4-1 scoring a single run in each of the first four inning. The Cardinals took their only lead of the game with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead for good with two in the sixth.
Leadoff hitter
Jordyn Berhow led the Pioneers going two-for-four at the plate, with three stolen bases and three runs scored against the Cardinals.
Shavonda Bender also went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Kasey Stegman,
Justine Pratcshler,
Brooke Glad and
Kylie Shetler tied for the team lead in runs batted in with one each.
The Pioneers faced a tough challenge in their second game Friday in a match-up against second-seeded Itasca. The Vikings took control of the game early, with five runs in the bottom of the first, two-run tallies both the second and third innings, and three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-1 win.
