The Northland volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak Friday night with a 3-0 over Minnesota North College - Vermilion before falling by the same score to defending MCAC Northern Division champion Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range Saturday. Both matches were played in the Northland Gym.
On Friday night, the Pioneers dominated the opening set 25-9. They survived a late rally from the Ironhawks to win the second set 25-17 and they completed the sweep with a 25-10 win in the third set.
Riley Gust and
Giselle Cole finished with 11 kills apiece.
Sunny Edin recorded 28 assists.
Kennedy Wallace had an impressive five service aces.
Jada Kosmatka reached double digits in digs with 10.
On Saturday, the Pioneers looked to make it two straight wins when they welcomed the Lady Norse to the Northland Gym. The Norse defeated perennial power Central Lakes earlier in the week, making Saturday's early-season match pivotal in the postseason picture.
The Pioneers and Lady Norse traded scores throughout the first two sets, with the Lady Norse pulling away late in each set to win by scores of 25-22 and 25-21, respectively. The Pioneers struggled to get back into the match in the third set, with the Lady Norse clinching the match with a 25-16 third set victory.
A challenging week awaits the Pioneers (5-4 overall, 1-2 MCAC North). On Wednesday, they travel to Alexandria Technical & Community College to face a Legend's team (6-3, overall, 3-0 MCAC North) that defeated the LadyNorse on Friday night. The Pioneers remain on the road Friday, Sept. 15 with a trip to Ironwood, Mich., to face NJCAA Division II Gogebic Community College (1-3 overall).
