The Northland volleyball team snapped a two-match losing streak with a pair of wins at Gogebic Communtiy College Friday afternoon. The Pioneers defeated the host Samsons 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 in the opening match. After a short break, they were back on the court against fellow MCAC Northern division team Minnesota North College - Rainy River. The Pioneers wasted little time against the Voyageurs, making it a 2-0 day with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 win in straight sets.
The Pioneers had big days offensively from
Riley Gust with 24 kills and four solo blocks, and
Allyson Hart, who finished with 20 kills, four service aces and 22 digs. Setter
Sunny Edin added 47 assists, and libero
Jada Kosmatka was second only to Hart with 20 digs over the course of two matches.
The two straight-set wins snapped a two-match losing streak. They also helped the Pioneers erase a bad trend of dropping the opening set. Heading into Friday's matches, the Pioneers dropped the opening set in eight of their previous nine matches and they had a 4-5 record to show for it.
Chamma notches 200th career win
Northland Co-Head Coach Abdul Chamma entered the 2023 season six wins shy of 200 with 194 career wins (194-115). The Pioneers got Chamma win number 199 on Sept. 8 with a three-set victory over MNC-Vermiilion. After falling to MNC-Mesabi Range on Sept. 9 and Alexandria Technical & Community College on Sept. 13, Chamma got his 200th win as head coach in the three-set win over Gogebic Friday afternoon.
Up next for the Pioneers is a trip to International Falls to face MNC-Rainy River for the second time in a five-day span. The Voyageurs are 2-7 overall and 1-3 against MCAC North teams. The Pioneers are 7-5 overall and 1-3 against MCAC North opponents.
