Five-set matches have become a common theme for the Northland volleyball team in 2023. On Wednesday, the Pioneers played their fourth five-set match of the season in a 3-2 loss at Concordia College Moorhead against the Cobber JV team. 

The host Cobbers started fast to claim the opening set 25-17, but the Pioneers bounced back in the second to even the score at 1-1 with a 26-24 second set victory. The Cobbers and Pioneers traded wins again in the third and fourth sets with the Cobbers taking the third set 25-14 and the Pioneers forcing a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth. The Cobbers took the deciding set 15-7. 

Riley Gust and Allyson Hart both reached double digits in kills for the Pioneers, with Gust recording 14 kills and Hart finishing with 11. Gust was credited with the Pioneers' only solo block on the night. Setter Sunny Edin had 33 assists on the night to push her season total to 199. Jada Kosmatka, Hart and Madysen Nordstrom all reached double figures in digs with 21, 13 and 10, respectively. 

Big weekend ahead
The Pioneers (0-1, 4-3) welcome a pair of Iron Range colleges to the Northland gym for a two-day home stand. On Friday, Northland hosts Minnesota North College - Vermilion (0-1, 0-2) at 6:30 p.m. The Pioneers are back on their home court Saturday with a match against MCAC North-leading Minnesota North College - Mesabi Range (1-0, 5-3) at noon.
